  17. <p>Indian forces carry out one of the worst massacres in Kashmir's
  18. history

  20. <p>     Perhaps there is a special corner in hell reserved for
  21. soldiers who fire their weapons indiscriminately into a crowd of
  22. unarmed civilians. That, at least, must have been the hope of
  23. every resident who defied an army-enforced curfew in the Kashmiri
  24. town of Sopore last Thursday to protest a massacre that left 55
  25. people dead and scores injured. It was India's latest blow in
  26. a three-year campaign to crush the predominantly Muslim state's
  27. bid for independence. In retaliation for the killing of one
  28. soldier, paramilitary forces rampaged through Sopore's market
  29. setting buildings ablaze and shooting bystanders. The Indian
  30. government pronounced the event "unfortunate" and claimed that
  31. an ammunition dump had been hit by gunfire, setting off fires
  32. that killed most of the victims.
